Chase the Snow in the Australian Alps
Most people are surprised Australia has a ski season at all, let alone one that runs for months. New South Wales' Snowy Mountains hold the country's biggest resorts, Thredbo and Perisher, plus Charlotte Pass, the oldest of the lot — all typically opening on the June long weekend and running through to early spring.
Falls Creek & Mount Hotham, Victoria
Victoria answers with its own alpine circuit a few hours out of Melbourne. Mount Hotham has earned a reputation as the "powder capital of Australia" for its steep terrain and reliable snowfall, while Falls Creek trades some of that vertical drop for a genuinely pretty alpine village — fireplaces, cellar doors, and a slower pace once the lifts close for the day.
A Snow Day Without the Skis
You don't need skis to justify the trip. Tobogganing, snowshoeing and even dog sledding are on offer at most resorts, and Mount Kosciuszko, the highest point on the mainland, is a walkable summit from Thredbo once the trail opens for the season. Our travel guide has more on getting up to the Alps.
